Do I Need Cash for Dominican Republic Tolls? 2026 Update

Yes - cash remains the most reliable payment method at Dominican toll booths. While the Paso Rápido electronic tag system is available, most toll plazas still primarily operate manual cash lanes. Dominican pesos (RD$) are preferred; US dollars are accepted at most booths but change is given in pesos.

Key Reality: Nearly all major highways in the Dominican Republic are tolled. Travelling from Santo Domingo to major destinations will involve multiple toll plazas. From January 15, 2025, RD Vial unified rates across most highways: the standard Category 1 rate is now RD$100 at all traditional toll stations (previously RD$60). The Nordeste Highway (Samaná route) has its own higher pricing structure, with El Catey being the most expensive single toll in the country at RD$400 for Category 1 vehicles.

2026 Update: January 2025 unified rate increases remain the current schedule for 2026. The Duarte expansion to 6 lanes (Santo Domingo-Santiago) continues with a new toll booth at Km 32 (added April 2025). The PLANACOVIAL US$421M infrastructure programme and Autopista Ámbar US$400M (Santiago-Puerto Plata) project are active. Total toll revenue reached RD$12.37 billion in 2025, up 36.8% from RD$9.03 billion in 2024, driven by the rate increase and traffic growth.

Group B — Autopista del Nordeste (Samaná Route) — Special Pricing

The Nordeste highway (Autopista Juan Pablo II / Carretera de Samaná) has its own higher tariff structure. Marbella uses the standard Cat 1–4 rates but a different Cat 5. Guaraguao and Naranjal share identical rates; El Catey is the most expensive single toll in the country.

How to Pay Dominican Republic Tolls

1. Cash (Primary Method):
