Do I Need to Pay the Envalira Tunnel Toll? 2026 Update
The Envalira Tunnel is the only tolled road in Andorra. If you are travelling between Andorra la Vella and Pas de la Casa (or continuing into France via the CG-2), you will pass through it, unless you choose the free but exposed mountain route over the Envalira Pass (Port d'Envalira, 2,408 m).
Key Reality: The tunnel charges a flat one-way toll of €8.10 for cars and €4.80 for motorcycles, VAT included. The pass road above it is free but slower, winding, and can close at short notice in snow. For most drivers the tunnel is the practical default.
2026 Update: The rates below are the current 2026 tariffs published on the official operator website Túnel d'Envalira. Fares include 4.5% VAT. Payment is accepted by cash, card, electronic toll devices and customer cards. Registered companies and frequent users can request invoices and discounts through the operator's customer service.
Andorra Envalira Tunnel Toll Costs: Current Rates
The Envalira Tunnel uses a flat-rate tolling system. Rates are fixed per vehicle category regardless of direction of travel and include 4.5% VAT. A hazardous goods supplement of €10.00 applies on top of the base toll for ADR-classified loads.

About the Tunnel
The Túnel d'Envalira is the highest road tunnel in Europe, located between altitudes of 2,043 and 2,052 metres. It is 2,879 m long (about 4,200 m including the access roads and the viaduct over the river Ariège) and is a two-way tunnel with one lane per direction. It was inaugurated on 26 September 2002 to provide a reliable all-weather link between Andorra and the south of France, connecting the CG-2 in Andorra with the RN22 in France and keeping Pas de la Casa permanently connected to the rest of the Principality. A parallel service and evacuation gallery, opened in 2012, links to the tunnel through 11 pressurised cross-galleries placed every 250 metres and equipped with cameras, SOS posts and public address systems. The free alternative, the mountain pass road (CG-2 via Port d'Envalira at 2,408 m), is winding with grades above 8% and can close at short notice during snowfall.
The tunnel has two entrances. The west entrance is a turn-off from the CG-2 at about kilometre 23, roughly 300 metres before the turn-off to the Grau Roig ski area, and is where the toll area, control building and concessionaire's offices are located. The east entrance is reached from the roundabout on the French RN22, after the roundabout connecting to the Ariège viaduct. The Parish of Encamp is where the tunnel is located.
The operator's team provides safety coverage 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Winter equipment must be used from 1 November to 15 May.
How to Pay the Envalira Tunnel Toll
Payment is made at the staffed toll area at the tunnel's west entrance on the CG-2 (km 23, Andorran side). Besides cash and cards, frequent travellers can pay with electronic toll devices or cards issued by the operator, as described below.
Accepted Payment Methods:
- Cash (Euro): Accepted at the staffed lanes. Andorra uses the Euro as its currency despite not being an EU member. Change is given in Euro.
- Credit and Debit Cards: Major credit and debit cards are accepted at the staffed booths. Contactless payment is available.
- Electronic Toll Devices and Solred Card: Frequent travellers can pay with a Bip&Drive or Bip&Go electronic toll device or a Solred card. The monthly frequent traveller discount applies when the same device or card is used (see Toll Discounts below).
- Invoice / Client Account: Companies, self-employed professionals and regular users can request invoices and register for a customer card issued by Túnel d'Envalira through the operator's customer service at Túnel d'Envalira.

Enforcement and Penalties
The Envalira Tunnel uses a staffed toll-area system located at the west entrance, so payment is collected at the toll area rather than through post-passage invoicing. There is no automated enforcement for missed payment in the way that cashless systems operate.
- Entry refusal: Vehicles that do not pay at the toll area barrier are not admitted. Barriers open only after payment is confirmed.
- Misuse of resident or worker discounts: The 50% Pas de la Casa discount is granted only to registered residents and workers of companies registered there, against the documentation required by the operator. Using a discount without entitlement may be sanctioned under Andorran law.
- Incorrect vehicle category declaration: Declaring a lower category than the vehicle actually belongs to in order to underpay is an infraction subject to fines.
- Tunnel regulations: The maximum speed inside the tunnel is 70 km/h and the minimum speed is 40 km/h. Keep a safety distance of at least 70 metres, use low beams, and do not stop, change direction or overtake. Violation of tunnel traffic rules is enforceable by the Cos de Policia d'Andorra.
- Breakdowns: Pull over, turn on all four indicators and use the SOS posts in the tunnel to call for assistance. Follow the instructions of the field agent when they arrive.
Recent Changes (2026)
Rates: The 2026 rates published by the operator are €8.10 for cars (Category 1), €14.20 for vans and vehicles with trailer between 2 m and 3 m (Category 2), €16.30 for two-axle heavy vehicles and coaches (Category 3), €20.30 for heavy vehicles and coaches with more than two axles (Category 4) and €4.80 for motorcycles (Category 5), all including 4.5% VAT. The hazardous goods supplement is €10.00.
Payment technology: Cash and card payment are available at the staffed toll area. Frequent travellers can also use Bip&Drive or Bip&Go electronic toll devices, Solred cards, or customer cards issued by the operator, and an online invoice request service is available.
Border and customs context: Andorra is not a member of the European Union or the Schengen Area. Travellers crossing from France or Spain into Andorra, and departing Andorra, pass through customs checkpoints separate from the toll booth. Shopping and fuel price differences between Andorra and neighbouring countries continue to drive significant cross-border traffic through the tunnel.
Promotions: The operator lists current promotions, including a free journey offer with E.Leclerc, on its official promotions page at Promotions.
Planning Your Journey
Cost Considerations:
- Car trip Andorra la Vella to Pas de la Casa (one-way): €8.10
- Motorcycle one-way passage: €4.80
- Van or vehicle with trailer (height 2–3 m): €14.20
- Coach or HGV (2 axles, over 3.5 t or over 3 m): €16.30
- HGV with 3 or more axles: €20.30
- Vehicles carrying hazardous goods (ADR): base toll + €10.00 supplement
- Frequent travellers (Category 1) paying with the same electronic device or Solred card: 10% to 50% off depending on monthly journeys
Toll-Free Alternative:
- The mountain pass road over Port d'Envalira (CG-2, 2,408 m) is free but winding, with grades above 8%.
- In winter and during spring/autumn snowfall the pass may close at short notice, leaving the tunnel as the only option.
- The pass is slower than the tunnel, and winter equipment must be used from 1 November to 15 May.
Border Crossings and Customs:
- Andorra shares borders with France (northeast, via Pas de la Casa on the CG-2) and Spain (southwest).
- Customs checks apply at both borders. Tobacco, alcohol, and goods duty-free limits are enforced.
- Andorran roads do not require a vignette. The Envalira Tunnel is the only toll point.
- French roads beyond the border use a separate tolling system, see France Toll Guide.
- Spanish roads beyond the border use a separate tolling system, see Spain Toll Guide.
Ski Season Traffic:
- The Grandvalira ski area (including Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa) is reached via the CG-2. Grau Roig is on the Andorran side of the tunnel, while Pas de la Casa lies beyond it, next to the French border. This is the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees.
- Expect queues at the tunnel booth on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons during ski season (December–April).
- Arrive early or mid-week to avoid congestion at both the toll and the French border customs post.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Andorra have more than one toll road?
No. The Envalira Tunnel is the only toll road in Andorra. All other roads in the country, including main national roads (CG-1 connecting Spain to Andorra la Vella, and local parish roads), are toll-free.
Can I pay by card at the Envalira Tunnel?
Yes. Credit and debit cards are accepted at the staffed lanes, including contactless payment. Frequent travellers can also use Bip&Drive or Bip&Go electronic toll devices or Solred cards. Carrying some Euro cash as a backup is advisable.
Are there any discounts available for the Envalira Tunnel?
Yes. Category 1 vehicles receive 10% to 50% off when making 6 or more journeys in a month with the same Bip&Drive or Bip&Go device or Solred card. Pas de la Casa residents and workers receive 50% off, and business customers with an operator customer card receive turnover-based discounts from 2.5% to 30%. See the Toll Discounts section above and the official Discounts page for details and application forms.
What is the height and weight limit for the Envalira Tunnel?
Category 1 covers vehicles up to 2 m in height and 3.5 t maximum permissible weight. Category 2 covers 2 m to 3 m in height, up to 3.5 t. Categories 3 and 4 cover heavy vehicles and coaches over 3 m in height or over 3.5 t, at €16.30 for two axles and €20.30 for more than two axles per passage. Oversize loads require a special permit from the Andorran authorities in advance.
Do I need a vignette or any other pass to drive in Andorra?
No. Andorra does not use a road vignette system. The Envalira Tunnel toll is the only road charge in the country. No motorway sticker or pre-registration is required to use the tunnel, although frequent travellers can register for an electronic toll device or customer card to access discounts.
Is the Envalira pass road really free?
Yes, the open-air CG-2 pass road over Port d'Envalira is free of charge. However, it is winding with grades above 8%, can close at short notice in snow, and winter equipment must be used from 1 November to 15 May. It is not a reliable all-weather alternative for most visitors.
What currency should I use at the toll booth?
The Euro (EUR) is the currency of Andorra and the currency in which tunnel fares are quoted. Fares include 4.5% VAT.
