Do Cars Pay Toll in Belgium? 2026 Update

No, with one exception. Belgian motorways are completely free for passenger cars, motorcycles, and vehicles under 3.5 t GVW. The Viapass distance-based toll system applies only to goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. The sole toll facility where cars pay is the Liefkenshoek Tunnel under the Scheldt near Antwerp.

Key Reality: Belgium has one of the densest motorway networks in Europe for its size, and for private cars it remains fully free. HGV operators, however, face a comprehensive distance-based toll covering motorways and many major roads across all three regions (Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels-Capital).

2026 Update: Wallonia indexed Viapass HGV rates in January 2026, and new rates took effect in all three regions on 1 July 2026 (CO₂ emission class surcharge in Flanders, indexation in Brussels, rate adjustment in Wallonia). A digital motorway vignette for passenger cars has been announced for 2027 but is not final, and no car toll has been enacted. Belgium remains car-toll-free in 2026.

Belgium Toll Costs: Current Rates

Viapass HGV Rates (per km, 2026)

As of July 1st, 2026, Viapass applies a CO₂ emission class surcharge in Flanders. Every OBU must carry a registered CO₂ emission class (from 1 to 5, where class 5 is reserved for zero-emission vehicles) in all three regions, but only Flanders prices by it for now. Rates depend on gross vehicle weight (including trailer), Euro emission class and region, and Brussels has separate highway and urban rates. All values below are in € per km:

Rates valid from 1 July 2026 (Viapass edition 01/07/2026). Wallonia rates exclude VAT because the Walloon charge is a fee subject to VAT; Flanders and Brussels charge a tax with no VAT. Brussels urban covers all local and regional roads that are not highway. CO₂ classes 1 to 4 change the Flanders rate only, and in Wallonia ZEVs pay the Euro 6 rate. Vehicles first registered before 1 July 2019 fall into CO₂ class 1 automatically. Determine your class with the Viapass CO₂ emission class calculator. Verify current tariffs at Viapass.

Liefkenshoek Tunnel - Point Toll (All Vehicles, 2026)

Tolls are charged per passage. Category 1 covers vehicles under 3 m in height, and Category 2 covers vehicles of 3 m and above (HGVs, motorhomes, taller vans) with lower night rates. The rate also depends on the payment method:

Vehicle Category Teletolbadge / OBU (€) Bank, Fuel or Credit Card (€) Cash, Standard Rate (€)
Category 1: under 3 m height (cars, motorcycles, light vans), 24/7 4.40 6.20 8.00
Category 2: 3 m height or more, night (22:00 to 06:00) 4.40 6.20 8.00
Category 2: 3 m height or more, day (06:01 to 21:59) 17.60 21.90 25.00

Liefkenshoek Tunnel is located northwest of Antwerp on the R2, is the only toll tunnel in Belgium, and provides an alternative to the Kennedy Tunnel and Antwerp Ring. Verify current rates at Liefkenshoektunnel.

How to Pay Belgium Tolls

HGV Viapass OBU:

  • GNSS OBU must be activated and placed in the vehicle before entering Belgium and stay in operation until you leave; the kilometer charge cannot be paid after driving
  • OBU available from designated service providers: Axxès, Satellic, Telepass, Toll4Europe, TotalEnergies / AS24 and W.A.G. Payment Solutions
  • Satellic is the national service provider, with 120 automated distribution points at the border and in Belgium; the OBU can be returned when you leave to recover the warranty
  • Register the vehicle CO₂ emission class in the OBU through your service provider; the Viapass calculator generates a document stating the class
  • EETS OBUs from other European providers registered for Belgium are accepted

Liefkenshoek Tunnel (cars and HGVs):

  • Cash (EUR), or bank, fuel and credit card at the toll plaza
  • Teletolbadge subscription gives the lowest rate, with passages invoiced afterwards by direct debit and a €40 deposit per badge; the badge is linked to the customer number, not to a vehicle
  • The Teletolbadge / OBU rate applies when paying with an OBU; Satellic invoices tunnel passages separately from the kilometer charge

Enforcement and Penalties

  • Fixed gantries with cameras and licence plate recognition, mobile control cameras and control vehicles check OBU use; on average an HGV is controlled about three times per route
  • Violation of the kilometer charge: administrative fine of €100 to €1,000 depending on severity, issued by the region that established the violation
  • Agents of the regional tax authorities can pull vehicles over and issue fines on the road
  • Foreign-registered HGVs are subject to identical enforcement; the Dutch NEDLINQ OBU is not accredited in Belgium, so a green status on it does not mean the charge is being paid
  • Incorrect vehicle parameters in the OBU (weight, Euro class, CO₂ emission class) mean the wrong rate is charged and may lead to a fine; fines can be disputed with the region using the procedure on the notice

Recent Changes (2026)

  • 1 July 2026 rate changes: New Viapass rates apply in all three regions: a CO₂ emission class surcharge in Flanders, an indexation in Brussels-Capital and a rate adjustment in Wallonia (SOFICO). Every OBU must carry a CO₂ class in all regions, although only Flanders charges by it for now
  • January 2026 changes: Wallonia indexed its kilometer charge on 1 January 2026, and the ZEV rates in Flanders and Brussels were adjusted on the same date
  • Axxès blue OBU phase-out: Blue OBUs from Axxès are no longer supported on the Belgian network since 1 January 2026; Axxès customers need the Viapass-compatible C'Moov 4G badge
  • Liefkenshoek Tunnel tariffs: Category 1 is €8.00 cash and €6.20 by card in 2026, up from €7.00 and €5.60 in 2024, with a €4.40 Teletolbadge / OBU rate
  • Car road pricing: A digital toll vignette for passenger cars and other vehicles up to 3.5 t has been announced for 1 May 2027, with online sales from 1 March 2027, but the plan is not final. Belgium remains car-toll-free for motorway use in 2026
  • Antwerp Oosterweel Link: The Antwerp ring road project (Oosterweel) is still under construction; check Lantis for opening phases and any future tolling of new sections
  • Zero-emission rates: Zero-emission HGVs pay sharply reduced Viapass rates in Flanders and Brussels (for example €0.009 and €0.017 per km for 3.5 t to 12 t), while in Wallonia ZEVs currently pay the Euro 6 rate

Planning Your Journey

  • Car drivers: no preparation needed; Belgian motorways are free; only the Liefkenshoek Tunnel costs €8.00 cash (€6.20 by card, €4.40 with a Teletolbadge) if you choose to use it (the alternative Kennedy Tunnel is free but more congested)
  • HGV operators: obtain a Viapass-compatible OBU and register its CO₂ emission class before entering Belgium; Satellic has 120 automated distribution points at the border and in Belgium
  • Brussels Ring (R0) and Antwerp Ring (R1) are included in the Viapass network, so HGV operators transiting the country cannot avoid toll roads on most practical routes; check the Viapass toll maps for tolled sections by region
  • The E40 (Calais–Brussels–Liège–Aachen), E17 (Antwerp – Ghent – Kortrijk), and E19 (Paris–Brussels–Antwerp) are the main international transit corridors, all covered by Viapass

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cars need an OBU in Belgium?

No. The OBU requirement applies only to goods vehicles over 3.5 t GVW. Passenger cars, motorcycles, and light vans drive all Belgian motorways and roads completely free without any device or registration.

What is Satellic?

Satellic is the national service provider commissioned by Viapass and one of six designated OBU providers. It provides GNSS on-board units for HGVs, available for purchase or rental, with 120 automated distribution points at the border and in Belgium. Foreign operators with EETS-registered OBUs from other providers (DKV, UTA, etc.) can use those instead if they cover the Belgian network.

Does the Viapass toll apply to vans and light trucks?

Yes. From 1 April 2016, the Viapass toll has applied to all goods vehicles over 3.5 t GVW, including light commercial vehicles and larger vans, whether empty or loaded. Vehicles at or under 3.5 t remain toll-free.

Do I need to register a CO₂ emission class?

Yes. Since 1 July 2026 every OBU must carry a CO₂ emission class from 1 to 5, even if you only drive in Wallonia or Brussels, where no CO₂ surcharge applies yet. Use the Viapass CO₂ emission class calculator to determine the class from your vehicle documents, then send the generated document to your service provider so the OBU can be updated.
