Do I Need to Pay Tolls in Denmark? 2026 Update
Tolls for passenger cars in Denmark apply only if you cross one of the two major fixed links. The vast majority of Danish roads, including all Danish motorways on the mainland, are completely toll-free for cars. Tolls apply at the Oresund Bridge (connecting Copenhagen to Malmö, Sweden) and the Great Belt Bridge / Storebaelt (connecting the islands of Fyn and Zealand). Trucks of 12 tonnes or more are the exception and pay a distance-based toll on the Danish state road network and parts of the municipal road network.
Key Reality: If you are driving a passenger car only within Jutland (the mainland peninsula), only on the island of Fyn, or only on the island of Zealand without using the Oresund or Great Belt crossings, you will pay zero tolls. Any trip between Zealand and the rest of Denmark, or between Denmark and Sweden, includes a crossing, so familiarity with the tolls is important for everyday travel.
2026 Update: The two bridges have different effective dates for their 2026 prices. The Storebaelt price list applies from 1 January 2026 and is adjusted annually in line with the Danish consumer price index. Oresundsbron uses dynamic pricing, and its current prices are valid from 14 September 2026. The ØresundGO annual fee is DKK 370. Copenhagen has no urban congestion charge; the proposed København congestion scheme remains in political discussion with no confirmed implementation date. Denmark operates a national kilometre-based truck toll (KmToll, Kilometerafgift) managed via the official Vejafgifter. Since 1 January 2025, trucks weighing 12 tonnes or more must pay a digital, distance-based toll covering approximately 10,900 km of the Danish state road network and parts of the municipal road network. This toll is calculated from GPS positions (GNSS on-board units or a digital KmToll ticket) based on distance driven, vehicle weight class, CO₂ emission class and whether the truck drives in a low emission zone. A toll for trucks between 3.5 and 12 tonnes is proposed from 5 January 2027, subject to the Danish Parliament passing the legislative proposal.

Great Belt Bridge (Storebaelt) - Fyn to Zealand (2026)
| Vehicle Type | Express price (DKK) | Card and cash price (DKK) |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger car 3-6 m | 205 | 235 |
| Motorcycle up to 3 m | 109 | 125 |
| Bus up to 6 m | 205 | 235 |
Prices are for a single one-way crossing and apply from 1 January 2026. You get the express price when you drive through a green express lane with an active Bizz or number plate agreement at the time of the trip, or with a motorhome, disability or commuter agreement. You are not entitled to the express price if you pay by credit card or cash, or if your Bizz or number plate agreement is not active at the time of the trip. The size of the vehicle is measured automatically at the toll station, so a trailer, bike rack or luggage box counts towards the total length and height. Larger vehicles are priced by length and height; use the price calculator on storebaelt.
Round-trip discounts with a Storebaelt Private Agreement:
- Evening discount (16:00 to 03:00 the same night): DKK 246 return for a car 3-6 m; DKK 131 return for a motorcycle or city car up to 3 m
- Weekend discount (Friday 12:00 to Sunday 00:00) and public holiday discount (out and back the same day): DKK 346 return for a car 3-6 m; DKK 184 return for a motorcycle or city car up to 3 m
- Leisure discounts apply to round trips only and you must use the same Bizz or number plate for both crossings
- Commuter discount: private customers receive it automatically after more than 14 crossings in one month
- Motorhome agreement (max 3,500 kg, over 6 m): DKK 314 per crossing; not available when towing a trailer that takes the total length above 10 m
Trucks of 12 t and above - KmToll (2026)
| Factor | How it affects the toll |
|---|---|
| Weight class | 12,000-17,999 kg; 18,000-32,000 kg; above 32,000 kg |
| CO₂ emission class | Five classes; class 1 pays the most per kilometre and class 5 the least |
| Low emission zone | A surcharge applies on tolled roads inside the zones in Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg |
| Tolled network | Approximately 10,900 km of state roads and parts of the municipal road network |
| VAT | No VAT is charged on the toll |
Per-kilometre rates are set per weight class and CO₂ emission class and are published on Vejafgifter. Empty driving is charged the same as loaded driving.
How to Pay Denmark Tolls
1. Bizz / BroBizz or ØresundGO RFID Transponder (recommended for regular users):
- Storebaelt: a Bizz or BroBizz transponder gives the express price (about 13% below the card and cash price) in the green express lanes
- Oresund Bridge: the discount price requires an active ØresundGO agreement (annual fee DKK 370), which brings a car to DKK 182 per crossing against DKK 470 at the regular price
- Also accepted at many toll plazas in Norway and Sweden
- Available online at brobizz.com or at service points near the crossings
- Account-based; the agreement only works while it is active and linked to a valid payment card
2. Number Plate Payment and Online Tickets:
- Storebaelt: register your number plate with a Bizz issuer and drive through a green express lane; ØresundPAY number plate payment also receives the express price
- Oresund Bridge: buy an online ticket in advance at oresundsbron; the ticket is valid for 30 days
- Storebaelt also sells a Storebaelt Ticket through Brobizz, which allows use of the express lane without a customer account
3. Credit / Debit Card:
- Storebaelt: pay in the blue lanes with Visa, Mastercard, Dankort, American Express, Diners or JCB; Shell Card, Circle K, OK, YX Truck, Routex, DKV and UTA fuel cards are also accepted
- Card payment charges the card and cash (regular) price; no Bizz or ØresundGO discount applies
4. Cash:
- Storebaelt: yellow cash lanes accept DKK or EUR (except the 500 euro note)
- Oresund Bridge: SEK and DKK only; euros are not accepted
5. Trucks of 12 t and above (KmToll):
- Pay through a provider using satellite-based GNSS on-board equipment or an app
- Without a working on-board unit, buy a digital KmToll ticket at Vejafgifter before driving; the ticket is valid for 24 hours from its start time
- GNSS equipment must be switched on at all times on the entire Danish road network, not only on tolled roads
To calculate toll costs for routes crossing the Oresund Bridge, Great Belt, or into neighbouring countries, use the TollGuru Denmark toll calculator:
Enforcement & Penalties
- Both crossings use toll stations with separate lanes for automatic payment, card and cash; the express lanes at Storebaelt have a 50 km/h speed limit and require 30 m distance to the vehicle in front
- If you accidentally use a lane that is not an express lane at Storebaelt, do not reverse in the toll area; stay in your lane and the express price is charged if you have an active automatic payment agreement
- CCTV records all vehicles; non-payment results in a fine notice issued to the registered owner
- A Bizz or number plate agreement that is not active at the time of the trip is charged the card and cash (regular) price
- Foreign-registered vehicles receive fine notices via European cross-border enforcement
- Trucks of 12 t and above that do not pay the KmToll face a fine of DKK 9,000; foreign trucks with a conviction for unpaid KmToll fines can be stopped at the Sund and Baelt links
Recent Changes (2026)
- 2026 price dates: The Storebaelt price list is effective from 1 January 2026 and is adjusted annually in line with the Danish CPI; current Oresundsbron prices are valid from 14 September 2026 under dynamic pricing; the ØresundGO annual fee is DKK 370
- Copenhagen congestion charge (still in discussion): The proposed congestion charge for the Greater Copenhagen area remains under political discussion and is not yet in effect; the Danish parliament has not passed enabling legislation
- Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link: Construction on the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel (Denmark–Germany undersea crossing) continues in 2026; the link is targeted to open in 2029 and will be tolled upon opening, with the toll level to be set by the Danish government
- KmToll for trucks: Trucks of 12 tonnes and above have paid a distance-based toll since 1 January 2025; the fine for non-payment is DKK 9,000 since 1 July 2025. A toll for trucks between 3.5 and 12 tonnes is proposed from 5 January 2027, subject to the Danish Parliament passing the legislative proposal
- HGV Eurovignette: Denmark has withdrawn from the Eurovignette system for heavy goods vehicles and replaced it with the KmToll; the Eurovignette no longer applies to Danish roads
Planning Your Journey
- Driving from Germany to Copenhagen in a car involves no tolls on Danish mainland motorways (E45, E20) until the Great Belt crossing (DKK 235, ~€32, at the card and cash price; DKK 205, ~€27, with Bizz or number plate payment) and potentially the Oresund Bridge onward to Sweden (DKK 470, ~€63, regular; DKK 420, ~€56, online; DKK 182, ~€24, with ØresundGO)
- Regular Oresund Bridge commuters save significantly with an ØresundGO, ØresundCOMMUTER or ØresundCOMMUTER+ agreement (ØresundCOMMUTER suits more than 8 crossing days a month)
- Trucks of 12 t and above should have a GNSS on-board unit active before entering Denmark, or buy a KmToll ticket at Vejafgifter before driving
- Ferries in Denmark are not free of charge. While you bypass the physical bridge toll plaza, you must purchase a commercial ferry ticket instead
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the Oresund Bridge toll in 2026?
A passenger car (max 6 m) pays DKK 470 at the regular price, DKK 420 with an online ticket (with the newsletter discount), or DKK 182 with an ØresundGO agreement (annual fee DKK 370). The toll applies in both directions.
Is the Great Belt toll charged in both directions?
Yes. The Great Belt Bridge toll is charged in both directions, every one-way crossing, whether Fyn→Zealand or Zealand→Fyn, is priced and charged separately at the toll station based on vehicle length and height. In 2026 a car (3-6 m) pays DKK 205 with Bizz or number plate payment and DKK 235 with card or cash.
Can I use a Swedish Oresund Bridge account in Denmark?
Yes. Your ØresundGO or Bizz agreement works from both the Swedish (Malmö) and Danish (Copenhagen) sides, in either direction. At the Oresund Bridge the discount price applies with an active ØresundGO agreement; at Storebaelt a Bizz or number plate agreement (including ØresundPAY) gives the express price.
Are Danish motorways otherwise free?
Yes for passenger cars and other vehicles under 12 tonnes: all other roads, including all mainland motorways, are toll-free. Since 1 January 2025, trucks ≥12 tonnes pay a distance-based road toll on about 10,900 km of the Danish state and municipal road network.
Which trucks pay the Danish KmToll?
Trucks weighing 12 tonnes or more that are registered for freight transport, used to haul semi-trailers, or operated with special permits. The toll depends on weight class, CO₂ emission class and whether the truck drives in a low emission zone, and no VAT is charged. Pay through a GNSS provider or buy a digital KmToll ticket before driving.
When will the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel toll start?
The Fehmarn Belt Tunnel between Rødby (Denmark) and Puttgarden (Germany) is targeted to open in approximately 2029. It will be tolled upon opening. The toll level will be set by the Danish government and has not been confirmed.
