What is E-ZPass

An E-ZPass is a small electronic transponder that is used to pay tolls for trips across 17 US states. You don’t need to stop to pay a toll. The transponder is mounted on your vehicle’s windshield. When you travel on any toll road, thruway, tunnel, or bridge, the transponder charges your E-ZPass account for the appropriate toll.

The E-ZPass usually provides a discount on the toll rate depending on the state that has issued the E-ZPass. However, you do not necessarily need an E-ZPass to drive in the US states. There are mostly electronic toll plazas which when detects a vehicle crossing without a valid tag, an invoice is mailed to the vehicle owner (it may include extra charges though).

Calculate tolls to travel across the US state with E-ZPass tag transponder using our E-ZPass Toll Calculator.

How does E-ZPass Work

E-Z Pass is an electronic toll collection system. As a motorist, you will have to open a prepaid E-ZPass account that is linked to a small electronic device or the transponder, installed on the windshield of your vehicle. As and when your vehicle enters the toll lane, the toll tag mounted on your vehicle is read by the antennae. Tolls are automatically deducted from the prepaid account linked.

How to get an E-ZPass

You can get E-ZPass by any of the following methods:

  • Buy it online by filling up the form on the E-ZPass website[1]
  • You can also get E-ZPass® On-the-Go online[2]. Once you receive your tag transponder, you can manage your EZ-Pass account by logging to the E-ZPass website[3]
  • Buy it from a retailer near you.
  • You will require a USA registered vehicle license plate number
  • You will receive the tag in 5-7 days; which would have to be mounted properly on your vehicle

How to install E-ZPass

The E-ZPass could be installed or mounted on your vehicle by following these simple steps:

For internal tags and passenger vehicles

The ideal mounting location of an e-zpass transponder in car is near the rear-view mirror on the inside of the windsheild.

  1. Clean the area you wish to place your tag transponder with a rubbing alcohol such as isopropyl, allowing it to dry, before placing.
  2. Remove the plastic tap from the back of the Velcro on the tag.
  3. Press the tags firmly on the windshield of your vehicle.

For external tags and commercial trucks

  1. Place the tag on a flat surface.
  2. Screw mount it on the front bumper where the license plate is located.
  3. Make sure the tag is positioned so that mounting holes correspond to the top of the license plate.

How much does an E-ZPass cost

The E-ZPass transponder is free; however, a few states (such as Illinois) require you to pay for a $10 refundable deposit. An initial prepaid balance is to be maintained in the E-ZPass account of $20- $35. This will be replenished from your card, as the balance goes below a certain amount.

Do I get a discount for using an E-ZPass

E-ZPass offers discounts on tolls depending upon in which state was it issued and which toll facility or toll lane you are using.

For example, car users using an E-ZPass NY on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge can save you $3.38 compared to paying it by E-ZPass (no cash is accepted here). Similarly, when paying tolls for PA Turnpike in Pennsylvania, E-ZPass users can save $6.70 compared to toll-by-mail payment.

Although the amount of discounts vary with time, in general, payment E-ZPass toll pass is always cheaper than paying by cash or by mail. Same applies to all other transponders discounts such as SunPass in Florida, TxTag in Texas, FasTrak in California, Peach Pass in Georgia.

Types of E-ZPass

The types of E-ZPass are listed below:

E-ZPass Basic

The E-ZPass basic plan comes with a free transponder without any requirement of minimum use. However, you would be required to maintain a minimum pre-paid balance. This will be replenished from your card, as the balance goes below a certain amount.

For Passenger and commercial vehicles, there is a 5% discount for E-ZPassNY accounts only on thruway tolls.

E-ZPass Flex

The E-ZPass Flex gives you the option to flip a switch on your transponder to indicate that you have enough passengers in your vehicle and thus be eligible for free travel on certain Express lanes that are covered by the E-ZPass. It works similar to a regular E-ZPass but comes with an additional benefit.

E-ZPass Plus

The E-ZPass Plus allows you to use the E-ZPass for parking, especially at airport garages in New York and New Jersey.

How to transfer E-ZPass to another car or truck

You can switch or transfer the E-ZPass transponder from one vehicle to another as long as you use it on a vehicle with the same vehicle type. Contact the Service Center at [1] for details.

E-ZPass for tourists

Get an E-ZPass. It has wide acceptance across 17 states in the United States. If you already have an E-ZPass from any of these states, you are good to go.

As toll charges vary depending on peak/off-peak hours, have enough balance in your E-ZPass tag when you travel. The E-ZPass is cheaper than cash on the locations where both are accepted. If you missed paying tolls, there are multiple ways you can pay for it.

If you are a tourist and have rented a car, you have the option to use the rental car’s license plate, provided the agency from where you are renting the vehicle permits this. They would need to allow the release of their rental car’s license plate to the renter for registering for E-ZPass. If this is allowed by the agency, register for E-ZPass NY in advance and get the tag transponder delivered to your address.
