Do I Need a Vignette for Hungary? 2026 Update

Yes - any motor vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes using a Hungarian motorway or expressway must have a valid e-Matrica (electronic vignette). There is no physical sticker; the vignette is registered to your license plate number in a central database and verified automatically by ANPR cameras.

Key Reality: Violators are given a strict 60-day window to pay the base rate of HUF 27,790 (~€78). If payment is delayed past 60 days, it escalates to the increased fine of HUF 95,730 (~€270).

2026 Update: Vignette prices were indexed on January 1, 2026 (about +4%). The D1 (passenger car) annual vignette is now HUF 61,760, and a new M1 regional annual vignette is available. Drivers can still purchase e-vignettes using cash or credit cards at thousands of physical retail locations.

Hungary Vignette Costs: Current Rates (2026)

Hungary uses a time-based vignette system. You pay once for a period (1-day, 10-day, monthly, or annual) and may use any tolled motorway or expressway in the country as many times as you like during that period. County and regional annual passes are also available (see below). There is no per-km charge for vehicles under 3.5t.

e-Matrica Rates by Vehicle Category (2026)

Vehicle Category 1-Day (HUF) 10-Day (HUF) Monthly (HUF) Annual (HUF)
D1M - Motorcycles 2,770 3,450 5,590 61,760
D1 - Passenger cars up to 7 seats and 3.5t 5,550 6,900 11,170 61,760
D2 - Vehicles with more than 7 seats, vans up to 3.5t and campers 7,890 10,040 15,820 87,650
U - Trailers of D2 vehicles 5,550 6,900 11,170 61,760

Official source: Vignette

Validity: A 1-day vignette is valid until 23:59 on the selected day. A 10-day vignette is valid for 10 consecutive days from the selected start date. A monthly vignette is valid from the start date until 23:59 on the same date of the following month.

Note: Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (trucks, buses) pay distance-based tolls via the HU-GO electronic toll system and do NOT use the e-Matrica. See the HU-GO section below.

County Vignette - When to Use It

A county vignette is an annual pass valid on the tolled motorway sections of one chosen county. It costs HUF 7,190 for D1 and U vehicles and HUF 14,370 for D2 vehicles, and is cheaper than the national annual vignette if you only drive within one county. A discounted county vignette is available for Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén (BAZ) county. Driving on toll roads outside the junctions of your county without another valid vignette (10-day, monthly or national annual) counts as driving without a vignette. The M1 regional annual vignette (HUF 15,000 for D1 and U, HUF 30,000 for D2) covers the M1 corridor.

Annual County and Regional Vignettes (2026)

Vehicle Category County Annual (HUF) BAZ Discounted County Annual (HUF) M1 Regional Annual (HUF)
D1 / D1M 7,190 2,500 15,000
D2 14,370 5,000 30,000
U 7,190 2,500 15,000

Note: Annual county, BAZ county and M1 regional vignettes are valid from January 1 to December 31, 2026. Motorcycle riders (D1M) buy these passes in the D1 category.

Trailer Vignette (U category) - When to Use It

A U (trailer) vignette is required for a trailer towed by a D2 vehicle; the D2 towing vehicle also needs its own D2 vignette. Trailers towed by D1 vehicles are covered by the D1 vignette. U vignettes cost the same as D1 vignettes for every validity period.

HU-GO: Hungary Truck Toll System (Vehicles Over 3.5t)

Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in Hungary use the HU-GO electronic distance-based toll system instead of the e-Matrica vignette system. Toll charges are calculated dynamically based on:

  • Vehicle axle category (J2, J3, J4, J5)
  • Road type (motorway or main road)
  • Environmental class (EURO emission class and CO2 emission class, including low-emission and zero-emission vehicles)
  • Distance travelled
HU-GO Category Axles Typical Vehicle Type
J2 2 axles Two-axle trucks and buses over 3.5t
J3 3 axles Three-axle heavy vehicles
J4 4 axles Four-axle heavy vehicles and combinations
J5 5+ axles Heavy vehicles and combinations with 5 or more axles

The HU-GO toll per kilometre is made up of an infrastructure charge plus charges for air pollution, noise and CO2 emissions. It varies by axle category, road type (motorway or main road) and emission class. Rates are indexed at the start of each year (about +4% on January 1, 2026) and may be revised during the year, so always check the official tariff. Liftable axles count towards the axle category even when raised.

Official source: Distance based

HU-GO is a satellite (GNSS) based system. Drivers either use an on-board unit (OBU) linked to a HU-GO account or buy a route ticket online before starting the trip. The tolled network covers motorways, expressways and selected main roads, and compliance is checked by roadside enforcement and cameras.

How to Buy a Hungary e-Matrica (2026)

All e-Matrica purchases are digital and linked to your vehicle's license plate. You do not receive a physical sticker. Enforcement is fully automated via ANPR cameras.

1. Online (Recommended):

  • Official portal: e-Matrica Portal - available in Hungarian, English, German, Romanian, Slovak
  • Available 24/7, purchase can be made before or on the day of travel (start date selectable)
  • Payment by major bank card
  • Confirmation email serves as your receipt - save it
  • Double-check your license plate number and country before paying - a typo means no valid vignette

2. Mobile App:

  • e-Matrica app (iOS and Android) - official national toll operator application
  • Supports saved vehicle profiles for repeat purchases
  • Buy before you enter the toll road network

3. Petrol Stations and Border Crossings:

  • MOL, OMV, Shell, and major petrol stations near motorway entry points sell e-Matrica at their terminals
  • Fuel stations and sales points near the main border entry routes (e.g. Hegyeshalom, Röszke, Záhony) also sell e-Matrica
  • Cash accepted at physical terminals; card recommended

4. Third-Party Resellers:

  • Authorized resellers add a small service fee (~€1-3) but offer multilingual support
  • Useful where language is a barrier, including for non-EU registered vehicles
  • Verify the reseller is an authorized partner of the national toll operator

Which Motorways Require a Vignette?

Hungarian motorways (autópálya, M-prefix) and expressways (autóút, M-prefix) require a valid e-Matrica, with a few short toll-free sections. Key routes:

Motorway Route Key Destinations Notes
M0 Budapest orbital ring road Connects M1, M3, M5, M6, M7 Links the radial motorways
M1 Budapest - Hegyeshalom (Austrian border) Győr, Vienna connection Busiest transit corridor
M2 Budapest - Vác - Slovak border Vác, Šahy direction Partially expressway standard
M3 Budapest - Nyíregyháza - Vásárosnamény Miskolc, Debrecen (via M35), Nyíregyháza Key eastern corridor
M5 Budapest - Röszke (Serbian border) Kecskemét, Szeged South-eastern corridor
M6 Budapest - Pécs - Croatian border Pécs, Osijek connection Southern Transdanubia
M7 Budapest - Lake Balaton - Croatian border Siófok, Zagreb connection Main tourist/holiday route
M35 Görbeháza - Debrecen Debrecen bypass M3 spur
M43 Szeged - Romanian border Makó, Nădlac connection M5 spur eastward

Toll-Free Roads: National roads (routes 1, 4, 6, 7, etc.) do not require an e-Matrica for cars but are significantly slower. Trucks on these roads may still pay HU-GO tolls on designated sections. Other tolled motorway and expressway sections include M4, M8, M15, M30, M31, M60 and M85; the official toll operator website lists every covered section and the toll-free exceptions.

HU-GO Updates:

  • Distance-based infrastructure charges were indexed from January 1, 2026
  • Check the official tariff for current per-kilometre rates, as they may change during the year

Planning Your Journey

Cost Considerations:

  • Transit crossing Hungary (e.g. Vienna to Bucharest via M1/M0/M5/M43): The 10-day D1 vignette costs HUF 6,900 (~€19.50)
  • Weekend Balaton trip from Budapest: 10-day D1 at HUF 6,900 covers the M7 return journey
  • Frequent traveller (monthly commuter): A monthly D1 vignette costs HUF 11,170 (~€31.50). Two 10-day passes cost HUF 13,800 total
  • Regular trips within one county: An annual D1 county vignette costs HUF 7,190; regular M1 corridor travel: the M1 regional annual vignette costs HUF 15,000
  • Truck transit Budapest - Serbian border (about 190 km via the M0/M5 corridor): the toll depends on axle category, emission class and road type - use the TollGuru calculator for an exact estimate

Toll-Free Alternatives:

  • National roads (such as Routes 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) parallel the major motorways but add significant travel time on cross-country trips
  • For short urban-adjacent sections, check if the specific road segment is covered by the motorway network before buying

Hungary vs. Neighbouring Countries (2026)

Hungary borders seven countries - all using different vignette or toll systems. If you are transit driving, you will likely need multiple passes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy a Hungary vignette at the border?

Yes. E-Matrica can be bought online before the trip, in the app, or at fuel stations and sales points near the main border entry routes (e.g. Hegyeshalom, Röszke, Záhony, Letenye). You must have a valid e-Matrica before entering a toll road, so buying in advance online is recommended.

What is the fine for driving without a vignette?

HUF 27,790 (~€78) if paid within 60 days. If unpaid, it escalates to HUF 95,730 (~€270). Using a lower vignette category than required (for example a D1 vignette on a D2 vehicle) is charged HUF 15,530, rising to HUF 49,190 if unpaid. Foreign-registered vehicles are not exempt - Hungary participates in cross-border debt collection agreements within the EU.

Is there a physical sticker I need to display?

No. The e-Matrica is entirely digital and linked to your license plate. You do not receive or display any sticker. Enforcement is by ANPR cameras reading your plate and checking the database. Keep your confirmation email as proof of purchase in case of dispute.

Does the vignette cover all roads or just motorways?

The e-Matrica covers the tolled Hungarian motorways (autópálya) and expressways (autóút) designated with the M-prefix; a few short sections are toll-free. It does not cover national roads (Routes 1-89), which are free for cars. The official toll operator website lists every covered road section.

What is the difference between a county vignette and the national annual vignette?

A national annual vignette covers all tolled roads for the year (HUF 61,760 for D1). A county annual vignette (HUF 7,190 for D1) covers only the junctions of the chosen county, and the M1 regional annual vignette (HUF 15,000 for D1) covers the M1 corridor.

Can I use my Hungarian vignette in other countries?

No. The Hungarian e-Matrica is valid only on Hungarian motorways. Each country operates its own vignette or toll system. If you are driving from Hungary into Austria, Slovakia, or Slovenia, you need separate vignettes for those countries.

Are electric vehicles exempt from the vignette?

No. As of 2026, Hungary does not offer EV exemptions from the e-Matrica requirement. All vehicles under 3.5t must purchase a vignette regardless of fuel type. Exemptions are limited to certain official vehicles, such as armed forces, police, customs, road maintenance and reciprocal diplomatic vehicles.
