== Do I need a SunPass to travel on Florida toll roads ==

A SunPass transponder isn’t compulsory to travel on Florida’s toll roads; however, with a SunPass transponder, you can take advantage of SunPass discount plans and the SunPass Plus Parking. It also serves as an easy way to pay tolls on Florida’s toll roads, express lanes, most bridges and many out of state toll roads at the lowest toll rate available.

In Florida, SunPass is accepted in the following toll facilities:

SunPass is a tag transponder to pay tolls across Florida toll roads, express lanes and bridges electronically. You can buy a SunPass device online or from retail stores and activate it[1]. The account also lets you track your SunPass payment, add money to SunPass account, pay missed tolls, etc. Mount the device on your windshield and every time you pass through a SunPass toll plaza, the relevant toll amount will be deducted from the linked account; you need not stop to pay tolls.

It also works across the toll facilities of Georgia and North Carolina as well.

Calculate toll charges to travel across Florida and other states with SunPass using SunPass Toll Calculator.

Which states accept SunPass

SunPass is used primarily on state and local toll roads, bridges and other toll facilities in Florida. It is also accepted across Georgia and North Carolina.

SunPass is accepted in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina along with PeachPass and NCQuickPass

Passes compatible with SunPass

SunPass is compatible with E-Pass and LeeWay. It means all toll roads and bridges that take one of the passes accept the other two as well. Georgia’s PeachPass and North Carolina’s NC Quick Pass are interoperable with SunPass, E-Pass, or LeeWay.

Sun Pass is not compatible with E-ZPass. However, SunPass Pro is compatible with E-ZPass - in all the 17 states where E-ZPass is accepted.

On the other hand, E-ZPass may be used on some Orlando toll roads, where the E-Pass is accepted. It may not be used on other Florida toll roads outside the Orlando area. You cannot use SunPass on roads that accept E-ZPass in north, roads in Texas, or in California.

What is SunPass PRO

SunPass PRO is a type of SunPass toll tag that is valid across Florida, Georgia and all the 17 states where E-ZPass is accepted. It can also be used to pay for parking at international airports in Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood, Miami, Orlando, Palm Beach and Tampa, and the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

SunPass PRO is a type of SunPass toll tag valid across Florida, Gerogia, North Carolina and 16 other states where E-ZPass works.
SunPass PRO state coverage
Delaware Florida Georgia
Illinois Indiana Kentucky
Maine Maryland Massachusetts
North Carolina New Hampshire New Jersey
New York Ohio Pennsylvania
Rhode Island Virginia West Virginia
States where SunPass Pro is accepted.

Where can I buy SunPass PRO

  • Online at SunPass website
  • Over phone at 1-888-TOLL-FLA (1-888-865-5352)
  • In person and at various convenient retail locations in Florida

What is the difference between SunPass and SunPass PRO

SunPass is Florida’s Prepaid Toll Program. A standard SunPass toll tag works across three states: Florida, Georgia and North Carolina only. While SunPass PRO toll tag, a product of SunPass, works across eighteen states including Florida, Georgia and North Carolina.

Do I need a SunPass PRO if I already have a SunPass transponder

Depending on where you plan to travel, you should get a SunPass PRO or SunPass. If you have to drive within Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, a standard SunPass toll tag will do. But if you want to visit other east coast states (as listed above), you should buy (or upgrade your SunPass to) a SunPass PRO.

SunPass or Epass: Which is better for Florida toll roads

Both SunPass and E-Pass work across all the toll roads, bridges and express lanes of Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. But they are issued by different agencies: SunPass by the state Department of Transportation and E-Pass by Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFXway).

Comparison of SunPass and E-Pass
SunPass E-Pass
Sticker costs $4.99 Sticker is free of cost
Portable device costs $19.99 Portable device costs $14.95
No discount on the basis of frequency of usage Discounts for frequent users
No extra discount on CFXway Extra discounts on CFXway
Can be recharged online or at several grocery stores and retail places Can be recharged online or at their drive-up service centers
Can be upgraded to SunPass Pro which works across 19 East coast states Can be upgraded to UNI which works across 19 East coast states

With these points, you can decide which one is better between SunPass and E-Pass for your travel. In general, people living near or frequenting the Orlando region prefer E-Pass while for other regions, SunPass is taken.

How does a SunPass work

A SunPass account is a prepaid account. Upon activation, a SunPass Portable or the SunPass Mini Transponder is to be installed on the windshield of the vehicle. A minimum amount is to be maintained in the prepaid account. As the vehicle passes through SunPass equipped lanes, the toll charges are electronically deducted from your prepaid toll account. SunPass Portable and SunPass Mini Transponders can be purchased, online, by phone[2], in person[3] or from retail locations[4]. SunPass also offers toll discount plans for motorists to save on their tolls.

Where can I purchase a SunPass

The SunPass Transponder could be purchased:

  • Online through SunPass website [5]
  • By phone
  • From 3100 designated retail locations throughout Florida
  • At all Turnpike service plazas, Turnpike gas stations, SunPass Service Centres, select Florida Welcome Centres, Visitor Centres, Rest Areas, and select County Tax Collector’s Offices.

How much does a SunPass for Florida cost

The SunPass Portable Transponder costs $19.99 plus tax and the SunPass Mini Transponder costs $4.99 plus tax. The SunPass transponder is an easy way to pay tolls and allows motorists to have tolls electronically deducted from the associated Prepaid Account.

Do I need a SunPass to travel on Florida toll roads

A SunPass transponder isn’t compulsory to travel on Florida’s toll roads; however, with a SunPass transponder, you can take advantage of SunPass discount plans and the SunPass Plus Parking. It also serves as an easy way to pay tolls on Florida’s toll roads, express lanes, most bridges and many out of state toll roads at the lowest toll rate available.

In Florida, SunPass is accepted in the following toll facilities:

How do I mount my SunPass transponder

The ideal mounting location of a SunPass transponder in car is near the rear-view mirror on the inside of the windsheild

The SunPass Portable transponder and the mini transponder are to be mounted on the inside of the vehicle’s windshield. Position the transponder either to the right or left of the rear-view mirror. If the windshield has a solar tint strip, the transponder is to be installed at least 2 inches below the strip. The SunPass Mini Transponder would not work on a motorcycle. However, you can use a Portable Transponder as long as it is properly mounted on the motorcycle windshield.

Can I pay toll in Florida without a SunPass

You can travel on Florida’s roads, expressways and bridges without a SunPass; however you would be charged through Toll-By-Plate at a higher rate. In Toll-By-Plate, a photo would be snapped of your license plate as you pass through toll gantries. The bill for the toll will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Can I use SunPass in a rental vehicle

The SunPass transponder can be used in a rental vehicle. To do this, you would need to add the rental vehicle and license plate information to your SunPass account. Do remember that when you return your rental vehicle, remove these details from your SunPass account and the transponder, to prevent additional toll charges to you.

How do I add a rental vehicle to my SunPass account

Below is the step to add rental car vehicle details to your SunPass account:

  • Log in to your SunPass account
  • Click on Transponders and Vehicles
  • Click on Add Another Vehicle and fill in the rental vehicle details
  • Add the Start and End Date/Time
  • Check the Rental Vehicle box
  • Click Add Vehicle
