The Montgomery Expressway bridge<ref>[http://www.montgomeryexpressway.com/Default.aspx The Montgomery Expressway bridge]</ref> also known as Alabama River Parkway Bridge spans the Alabama River on the north side of Montgomery, making for easy access to Millbrook and Prattville. It costs $1.50 to travel in one direction if you use Alabama Freedom Pass.

No — you can pay cash or credit card at all active Alabama toll bridges. However, the Alabama Freedom Pass saves 50 cents per trip for residential users and can be used via mobile app, eliminating the need for cash or a physical card.

Key Reality: Alabama operates one of the smallest toll networks in the United States — just 3 active toll bridges as of 2026. The state uses its own Freedom Pass system (not E-ZPass), meaning transponders from other states are not accepted.

The Tuscaloosa Eastern Bypass<ref>[http://www.tuscaloosabypass.com/ The Tuscaloosa Eastern Bypass]</ref> or the Warrior Loop is four-lane, 18-mile bypass of the city of Tuscaloosa. Its route begins at Interstates 20/59 in Cottondale and terminate at U.S. Highway 82 just to the west of Northport. It costs $1.50 to travel in one direction if you use Alabama Freedom Pass.

2026 Update: Rates at all three American Roads facilities were updated effective January 5, 2026. The Foley Beach Express bridge became permanently toll-free in May 2024 after ALDOT purchased it, reducing Alabama's active toll count from 4 to 3. A companion $52 million bridge alongside the former Beach Express crossing is expected to open summer 2026, further expanding toll-free coastal capacity. John Laing announced acquisition of American Roads LLC in early 2026, covering the three Alabama toll bridges; no changes to toll operations or rates are expected as a result of the ownership transition.

The Emerald Mountain Expressway<ref>[http://www.emeraldmountainexpressway.com/ The Emerald Mountain Expressway]</ref> crosses on the Tallapoosa River is located between Montgomery and Elmore counties. The bridge connects the City of Montgomery and Montgomery County to Elmore County by way of Wares Ferry Road, County Road 74, and County Road 4 (Rifle Range Road). It costs $1.75 to travel in one direction if you use Alabama Freedom Pass.

Foley Beach Express<ref>[http://www.beachexpress.com/ Foley Beach Express]</ref> is 14.0-mile-long partial toll road near the beaches of Baldwin County near the Gulf of Mexico. It is an alternate route for the SR 59 in nearby Gulf Shores. It costs $2.75 to travel in one direction if you use Alabama Freedom Pass.
+

All three active toll bridges charge flat rates per crossing, regardless of time of day or direction of travel. The rates below are cash/credit card rates effective January 5, 2026. Freedom Pass holders save 50¢ per residential trip or a minimum of 45¢ per commercial trip.

The 14-mile Foley Beach Express connecting Orange Beach and Gulf Shores to I-10 near Foley had its Intracoastal Waterway bridge toll permanently removed on May 23, 2024, after ALDOT purchased the crossing for $57 million. The route is now redesignated as an extension of SR-161 and is fully toll-free under ALDOT maintenance. Traffic on the corridor grew more than 50% in 2025 following toll removal. A new companion $52 million bridge — also toll-free — is expected to open in summer 2026, doubling crossing capacity and strengthening coastal evacuation routes.

No. Alabama is not part of the E-ZPass network.
Invoices are mailed to the registered vehicle owner with additional administrative fees. Freedom Pass account holders with insufficient funds also receive an invoice. Repeated non-payment can result in vehicle registration suspension. Follow the instructions on the invoice for payment options.

Two-axle vehicles need to pay the following rates:

Do motorcycles get a discount?

+

No. Motorcycles are classified as 2-axle vehicles and pay the same rate as standard passenger cars ($2.50 cash / $2.00 Freedom Pass). No special motorcycle discount exists.

+

No. ALDOT permanently ended tolls on the Foley Beach Express bridge on May 23, 2024 after purchasing it for $57 million. The entire route is now toll-free, and a new companion bridge opening in summer 2026 will add further toll-free capacity at the coast.

+

Yes. Montgomery Expressway and Tuscaloosa By-Pass share an identical rate schedule effective January 5, 2026, and Emerald Mountain Expressway follows the same American Roads rate structure. Do I Need a Freedom Pass for Alabama? 2026 Update

Alabama Toll Costs: Current Rates (2026)

How to Pay Alabama Tolls

Alabama toll bridges accept four payment methods. E-ZPass and other out-of-state transponders are not accepted — Alabama uses its own Freedom Pass network exclusively for electronic tolling.

1. Alabama Freedom Pass (Electronic Transponder):

 • RFID window-sticker transponder; one transponder assigned per vehicle per account
 • $25 deposit to open an account; no service fees and no expiration date
 • Residential accounts: 50¢ discount per trip; Commercial accounts: minimum 45¢ discount per trip
 • Automatic replenishment when balance runs low
 • Works at all three active Alabama toll facilities: Montgomery Expressway, Tuscaloosa By-Pass, and Emerald Mountain Expressway
 • Bestpass fleet transponders (6C protocol) are also accepted at all three American Roads facilities in Alabama

2. Alabama Freedom Pass Mobile App:

 • Available for iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play)
 • Pay using lane locator codes displayed at each toll lane — no physical transponder required
 • Link an existing Freedom Pass account or bill Visa, Mastercard, or Discover directly
 • Receipt emailed after each trip; real-time balance information for account holders

3. Cash:

 • Accepted at all active toll booths, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
 • Change is always provided; no exact change required

4. Credit Card:

 • Accepted in lanes at Montgomery Expressway and Tuscaloosa By-Pass
 • Unpaid invoiced tolls (e.g. insufficient Freedom Pass balance) incur additional administrative fees
 • Repeated non-payment can result in vehicle registration suspension

Alabama Toll Facilities: Details

Montgomery Expressway

Spans the Alabama River on the north side of Montgomery, connecting the capital city with Millbrook and Prattville. Serves as a direct alternative to congested I-65 and I-85. Two toll plazas operate 24/7. Address: 2949 Alabama River Parkway, Millbrook, AL 36054. Contact: (334) 290-2002 | mexoffice@montgomeryexpressway.com.

Tuscaloosa By-Pass (Joe Mallisham Parkway Bridge)

An 18-mile, four-lane western bypass of Tuscaloosa crossing the Black Warrior River. Connects US-82, I-20/I-59, and Highways 171, 43, 69N and 69S. Address: 2220 Joe Mallisham Parkway, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401. Freedom Pass lanes are staffed for all traffic Monday–Friday: southbound 6–8 AM; northbound 4–6 PM. Bicycles are welcome using the far right lanes. Maximum vehicle height 19 ft / width 11 ft; call (205) 752-2003 for oversized loads. Contact: tbpoffice@tuscaloosabypass.com.

Emerald Mountain Expressway

Crosses the Tallapoosa River between Montgomery and Elmore counties via Wares Ferry Road (CR-74) and Rifle Range Road (State Route 4). Alternative to congested Highway 231 for east Montgomery access. Accessible from Dozier Road off Wares Ferry Road (SR-64) heading toward Wetumpka. Note: As of 2026 the City of Montgomery has a detour at the Wares Ferry Road / McLemore Drive intersection; the Emerald Mountain Expressway itself remains open and operational.

Foley Beach Express (Now Toll-Free)

Recent Changes (2026)

January 5, 2026 Rate Update (All Three American Roads Bridges):

 • Residential 2-axle cash/credit rate raised to $2.50 (previously $2.00 at most facilities)
 • Commercial 2-axle cash rate raised to $4.00; heavier vehicles scale incrementally by axle
 • Freedom Pass 50¢ residential discount and minimum 45¢ commercial discount maintained
 • Identical rate schedule applies to both Montgomery Expressway and Tuscaloosa By-Pass; Emerald Mountain Expressway follows the same American Roads rate structure

Ownership Transition (2026):

 • John Laing announced acquisition of American Roads LLC — the operator of all three Alabama bridges — along with the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel concession in Michigan
 • The combined portfolio serves approximately 7 million trips annually
 • No changes to toll operations, payment systems, or Freedom Pass programme are expected as a result of the ownership transition

Foley Beach Express / Coastal Expansion:

 • ALDOT purchased and de-tolled the bridge May 23, 2024; traffic volume surged 50%+ in 2025
 • New companion $52 million Intracoastal Waterway bridge (SR-161 connector): deck completed late 2025, roadway paving ongoing, opening expected summer 2026
 • Will double crossing capacity and strengthen Gulf Coast evacuation infrastructure

Planning Your Journey

Toll-Free Alternatives:

 • All Alabama interstates (I-65, I-20, I-59, I-10, I-85) are completely toll-free
 • Montgomery area: I-65 and I-85 provide toll-free access to north Montgomery — typically 15–30 minutes longer during peak hours versus the Expressway
 • Tuscaloosa area: US-82 surface roads provide toll-free but slower crossing of the Black Warrior River
 • Wetumpka / Elmore County: Highway 231 provides toll-free access but experiences heavier congestion

Is a Freedom Pass Worth It?

 • For visitors: with only three bridges at flat rates under $3.00 cash, paying cash is perfectly practical for short stays
 • For commuters: the 50¢-per-trip savings plus rewards toward free trips makes Freedom Pass worthwhile for regular users
 • $25 deposit to open; no fees or expiration; balance remains usable indefinitely across all three bridges
 • Mobile app means no physical transponder card required — just a smartphone

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Alabama accept E-ZPass?

No. Alabama is not part of the E-ZPass network. Out-of-state transponders including E-ZPass, SunPass, and Peach Pass will not work at Alabama toll bridges. You must use the Alabama Freedom Pass, cash, credit card (where accepted), or the Freedom Pass mobile app.

What happens if I miss a toll payment?

Invoices are mailed to the registered vehicle owner with additional administrative fees. Freedom Pass account holders with insufficient funds also receive an invoice. Repeated non-payment can result in vehicle registration suspension. Follow the instructions on the invoice for payment options.

Do motorcycles get a discount?

No. Motorcycles are classified as 2-axle vehicles and pay the same rate as standard passenger cars ($2.50 cash / $2.00 Freedom Pass). No special motorcycle discount exists.

Is the Foley Beach Express still a toll road?

No. ALDOT permanently ended tolls on the Foley Beach Express bridge on May 23, 2024 after purchasing it for $57 million. The entire route is now toll-free, and a new companion bridge opening in summer 2026 will add further toll-free capacity at the coast.

Are the toll rates the same at all three American Roads bridges?

Yes. Montgomery Expressway and Tuscaloosa By-Pass share an identical rate schedule effective January 5, 2026, and Emerald Mountain Expressway follows the same American Roads rate structure. All three charge $2.50 for a standard 2-axle residential vehicle (cash/credit) or $2.00 with Freedom Pass.

Can I pay at any time of day?

Yes. All toll plazas operate 24/7. There is no peak or off-peak pricing — flat rates apply at all times. Note that Freedom Pass dedicated lanes at Tuscaloosa By-Pass are only staffed during peak hours (southbound 6–8 AM; northbound 4–6 PM, Monday–Friday), though Freedom Pass transponder lanes are available at all times.
