Canada has all its toll roads, bridges and other toll facilities in only four of its provinces: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Following are its major toll facilities:
- Ontario Highway 407
- Ontario Highway 412
- Cobequid Pass
- Quebec Autoroute 30
- Confederation Bridge
Calculate the tolls and gas cost to travel across all the Canadian provinces using the Canada Toll Calculator.
How do you pay tolls in Canada
You can pay tolls in Canada by following methods:
- transponder (primary, secondary)
- cash
- license plate or video
- credit card
- prepaid card
The various transponders or toll passes accepted in Canada are:
A25 transponder | E-Pass Tag | StraitPASS |
A30 Express transponder | MACPASS |
The 407 highway charges toll using distance-based tolling. At some cross-border bridges with New York and Michigan, you can pay the toll in cash in both Canadian and US dollars.
Click on the province’s name to learn about their toll payment methods, toll facilities and more:
Alberta | Nova Scotia | Prince Edward Island |
British Columbia | Northwest Territories | Quebec |
Manitoba | Nunavut | Saskatchewan |
New Brunswick | Ontario | Yukon |
Newfoundland and Labrador |
How much do toll rates cost in Canada
Toll rates in Canada vary for each toll facility depending on vehicle type, distance travelled and other factors. Find the toll rates for major toll facilities on their respective website as listed below:
Does EZ Pass work in Canada
Yes, but only some of the Canadian cross-border toll bridges take EZ-Pass. They are listed below:
- Peace Bridge
- Rainbow Bridge
- Whirlpool Rapids Bridge (accepts NEXUS card as well)
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge
- Thousand Islands Bridge
You can get an E-ZPass in Canada from the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission[6].
How do you pay for toll roads in Ontario
Ontario has one toll road: 407 ETR. It has two connecting stretches called Highway 412 and Highway 418. The tolls for all of them can be paid:
- online
- through pre-authorized payments
- through online banking, telephone banking, or at the teller using 407 account number
- by cheque
- in person at 407 ETR’s Customer Service Centre
Note that Ontario’s highway 401 is toll-free.
How to pay tolls in Quebec
The tolls on two toll bridges in Quebec - A25 bridge and A30 Express bridge - can be paid by creating their respective customer account that comes with a transponder. You can also opt for credit card, cash or video tolls at higher rates.
Trans Canada highway tolls
The Trans-Canada Highway[7] is a series of provincial highways which join all ten provinces of Canada. The Cobequid Pass Toll Highway of Nova Scotia is the tolled section of Trans-Canada Highway. You can pay tolls here using E-Pass tag or cash. See its toll rates here[8].
Calculate tolls and fuel cost to travel across Canada
Calculate routes, tolls and fuel costs for your travel by car, truck, taxi, bus, caravans (with or without a trailer) in Canada and other North American countries using TollGuru Trip Calculator. It also shows the cheapest, fastest and other optimal routes to your destination along with toll plaza(s) location en route, payment methods and more. When you choose EV, you can see the charging stations along your way and their connector type, cost, contacts etc.
Rideshare, OEM, TMS, fleet companies and other transport businesses can leverage toll intelligence by integrating with the TollGuru Toll API for pre-trip calculation and post-trip reconciliation.
