Do I Need to Pay Tolls in Guyana? 2026 Update
No. Guyana has had zero toll facilities since August 1, 2025. Every bridge that previously charged a toll - the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the Berbice River Bridge, and the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge in Linden - became completely free to cross on that date, confirmed directly by Guyana's Department of Public Information (DPI): "The DHB, as well as the Berbice River Bridge and the McKenzie/Wismar Bridge in Linden, are now toll-free as of August 1, 2025."

It affected every toll point that previously existed in the country - there is no partial toll-free status or remaining tolled facility anywhere in Guyana as of 2026.
2026 Update: The new US$260 million Demerara River Crossing (Guyana's largest infrastructure project, built by China Railway Construction International Limited) opened to vehicular traffic in September 2025, replacing the decades-old floating Demerara Harbour Bridge. It operates 24/7, toll-free by design, with a maximum speed limit of 80 km/h and no restrictions on vehicle size or weight. The old floating bridge (in service since 1978) remains operational as a secondary crossing during the transition period. Separately, the new Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge in Linden (Region 10) is targeted for completion in 2026 and will also be toll-free from opening. The government continues subsidising the Berbice Bridge Company and the Linden Town Council to cover the revenue previously collected via tolls - GY$1.015 billion was allocated in the 2025 budget for this purpose, up from GY$215.2 million in 2024.

Bridge Details (2026)
Demerara Harbour Bridge / New Demerara River Crossing: The original 1.85 km (6,078 ft) floating pontoon bridge served West Bank Demerara to Peter's Hall on the East Bank for over four decades before going toll-free in August 2025. A new, permanent US$260 million high-span bridge (built by China Railway Construction International Limited) opened to traffic in September 2025 nearby, designed to be toll-free from day one, operating 24/7 with an 80 km/h speed limit and no size or weight restrictions. Over 50,000 daily commuters are expected to use the new crossing. The old floating bridge remains in service as a secondary route during the transition. Berbice River Bridge: A 1,570-meter pontoon bridge (the 6th longest floating bridge globally), previously operated by Berbice Bridge Company Inc. under a private concession with the highest tolls in the country. Since August 1, 2025, the government subsidises the company directly (GY$1.015 billion allocated in the 2025 budget) so the bridge can operate without charging users. The government has also discussed acquiring the bridge outright. A separate, new high-span Berbice bridge - similar in design to the new Demerara crossing - has also been discussed, though President Ali indicated it may carry a toll even though the existing floating bridge will remain free regardless. Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge (Linden, Region 10): Connects Mackenzie and Wismar across the Demerara River in Linden. Previously generated approximately GY$6 million monthly (over GY$70 million annually) in toll revenue for the Linden Town Council, funding waste management and municipal services - this revenue is now replaced by government subsidy following the August 1, 2025 toll elimination. A new bridge at this crossing is targeted for completion in 2026 and will also be toll-free. Confirm current status at DPI.
