Guyana Toll Roads Guide: Now Toll-Free Nationwide

Coverage: Zero toll facilities nationwide - Demerara Harbour Bridge (and its 2025 replacement), Berbice Bridge, and the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge are all free to cross
Currency: Guyanese Dollar (GYD) - not relevant for tolls, since none are charged
Technology: N/A - no toll booths remain in operation for the purpose of charging a fee
Operators: Ministry of Public Works (Demerara crossings); Berbice Bridge Company Inc. (now government-subsidised); Linden Town Council (Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge, now government-subsidised)

Do I Need to Pay Tolls in Guyana? 2026 Update

No. Guyana has had zero toll facilities since August 1, 2025. Every bridge that previously charged a toll - the Demerara Harbour Bridge, the Berbice River Bridge, and the Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge in Linden - became completely free to cross on that date, confirmed directly by Guyana's Department of Public Information (DPI): "The DHB, as well as the Berbice River Bridge and the McKenzie/Wismar Bridge in Linden, are now toll-free as of August 1, 2025."

Key Reality: This was a nationwide policy decision announced by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali in August 2024 and fully implemented a year later. It affected every toll point that previously existed in the country - there is no partial toll-free status or remaining tolled facility anywhere in Guyana as of 2026.

2026 Update: The new US$260 million Demerara River Crossing (Guyana's largest infrastructure project, built by China Railway Construction International Limited) opened to vehicular traffic in September 2025, replacing the decades-old floating Demerara Harbour Bridge. It operates 24/7, toll-free by design, with a maximum speed limit of 80 km/h and no restrictions on vehicle size or weight. The old floating bridge (in service since 1978) remains operational as a secondary crossing during the transition period. Separately, the new Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge in Linden (Region 10) is targeted for completion in 2026 and will also be toll-free from opening. The government continues subsidising the Berbice Bridge Company and the Linden Town Council to cover the revenue previously collected via tolls - GY$1.015 billion was allocated in the 2025 budget for this purpose, up from GY$215.2 million in 2024.

Guyana Toll Costs: There Are None (2026)

There is no current toll rate table for Guyana - crossing every major bridge in the country costs nothing. For historical reference only, the rates that applied before August 1, 2025 were:

Crossing Historical Rate (Before Aug 1, 2025) Current Rate (2026)
Demerara Harbour Bridge GYD 40 (motorcycle) to GYD 700 (motor lorry); GYD 200 for cars/minibuses. Historically GYD 5 at 1978 opening, raised to GYD 100 in 1998, then GYD 200 in 2017 FREE
Berbice River Bridge GYD 1,900 for cars - the highest toll in the country, nearly 10x the Demerara Bridge rate FREE
Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge (Linden) GYD 60 for cars, higher for larger vehicles FREE

Bridge Details (2026)

Demerara Harbour Bridge / New Demerara River Crossing: The original 1.85 km (6,078 ft) floating pontoon bridge served West Bank Demerara to Peter's Hall on the East Bank for over four decades before going toll-free in August 2025. A new, permanent US$260 million high-span bridge (built by China Railway Construction International Limited) opened to traffic in September 2025 nearby, designed to be toll-free from day one, operating 24/7 with an 80 km/h speed limit and no size or weight restrictions. Over 50,000 daily commuters are expected to use the new crossing. The old floating bridge remains in service as a secondary route during the transition. Confirm current status at harbourbridge.gov.gy.

Berbice River Bridge: A 1,570-meter pontoon bridge (the 6th longest floating bridge globally), previously operated by Berbice Bridge Company Inc. under a private concession with the highest tolls in the country. Since August 1, 2025, the government subsidises the company directly (GY$1.015 billion allocated in the 2025 budget) so the bridge can operate without charging users. The government has also discussed acquiring the bridge outright. A separate, new high-span Berbice bridge - similar in design to the new Demerara crossing - has also been discussed, though President Ali indicated it may carry a toll even though the existing floating bridge will remain free regardless. Confirm current status at berbicebridge.

Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge (Linden, Region 10): Connects Mackenzie and Wismar across the Demerara River in Linden. Previously generated approximately GY$6 million monthly (over GY$70 million annually) in toll revenue for the Linden Town Council, funding waste management and municipal services - this revenue is now replaced by government subsidy following the August 1, 2025 toll elimination. A new bridge at this crossing is targeted for completion in 2026 and will also be toll-free. Confirm current status at DPI.

Recent Changes (2025-2026)

  • August 1, 2025: All bridge tolls in Guyana eliminated simultaneously - Demerara Harbour Bridge, Berbice River Bridge, and Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge - confirmed directly by DPI
  • September 2025: New Demerara River Crossing opened to vehicular traffic, toll-free by design, alongside the now-free original floating bridge
  • 2025 national budget: GY$1.015 billion allocated to subsidise the Berbice Bridge Company and cover lost toll revenue, up from GY$215.2 million in 2024
  • Ongoing (2026): New Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge under construction, targeted for 2026 completion, toll-free from opening; government in discussions to formally acquire the existing Berbice Bridge outright
  • No new toll facility of any kind has been proposed or announced anywhere in Guyana following the August 2025 elimination

Planning Your Journey

Since there is no toll cost to budget for anywhere in Guyana, journey planning is now simply about route and time, not cost:

  • Georgetown to New Amsterdam (crossing the Berbice River Bridge): free, previously the most expensive crossing in the country at GYD 1,900 for a car
  • Georgetown to West Bank Demerara (crossing either the old floating bridge or the new high-span crossing): free
  • The Demerara Harbour Bridge (old structure) still periodically opens to allow river vessel traffic through, causing delays of 15-45 minutes - this is unrelated to tolling and continues regardless of the toll-free status
  • Linden to Mackenzie/Wismar area: free

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Guyana have any toll roads or bridges in 2026?

No. As of August 1, 2025, every bridge that previously charged a toll in Guyana became free to cross. There are zero toll facilities anywhere in the country as of 2026.

How is the government paying for bridge maintenance without toll revenue?

Through direct budget subsidies. The 2025 national budget allocated GY$1.015 billion specifically to support toll-free bridge operations, replacing revenue previously collected from users. This funding covers the Berbice Bridge Company's operating costs and the Linden Town Council's lost Mackenzie/Wismar Bridge toll income.

Will the new Berbice high-span bridge have a toll?

This is unresolved. President Ali has indicated the future new high-span Berbice bridge (still in planning) may carry a toll, even though the existing floating Berbice bridge will remain toll-free permanently regardless of what happens with any new structure. No firm decision has been announced as of this writing.

What happened to the toll booth employees?

Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo publicly confirmed that toll booth employees have job security following the elimination of tolls, since the bridges still require operational staffing and maintenance regardless of whether a fee is charged to cross.
