Do I Need a TxTag for Texas? 2026 Update
No — but you'll pay double the toll rate without one. Texas operates the largest toll road network in the United States, with electronic tags providing approximately 50% savings over Pay-by-Mail rates across all facilities.
Key Reality: Without an electronic tag you pay double the rate plus administrative fees. A Dallas-to-Houston trip without a tag can cost $50+ more than the tagged rate in unnecessary charges.
2026 Update: HCTRA took over TxTag operations from TxDOT in November 2024. North Texas (NTTA) toll rates increased July 1, 2025 from $0.21 to $0.22/mile for TollTag holders, with ZipCash (Pay-by-Mail) customers paying double at $0.44/mile. Additionally, as of May 2025, the San Luis Pass Bridge in Galveston County is now completely toll-free. Texas remains outside the E-ZPass network — TxTag, TollTag, and EZ Tag all work on Texas toll roads; E-ZPass does not.
