Do I Need a TxTag for Texas? 2026 Update
No — but you'll pay double the toll rate without one. Texas operates the largest toll road network in the United States, with electronic tags providing approximately 50% savings over Pay-by-Mail rates across all facilities.
Key Reality: The standard, most direct route between Dallas and Houston is Interstate 45 (I-45), which is completely toll-free for the entire 240-mile stretch. A driver making a normal trip between the two cities will pay exactly $0 in tolls, meaning a tag is completely unnecessary for the drive itself.
2026 Update: HCTRA took over TxTag operations from TxDOT in November 2024. North Texas (NTTA) toll rates increased July 1, 2025 from $0.21 to $0.22/mile for TollTag holders, with ZipCash (Pay-by-Mail) customers paying double at $0.44/mile. Additionally, as of May 2025, the San Luis Pass Bridge in Galveston County is now completely toll-free. Texas remains outside the E-ZPass network — TxTag, TollTag, and EZ Tag all work on Texas toll roads; E-ZPass does not.

How to Pay Texas Tolls
1. Electronic Tag (Recommended — up to 50% savings):
- TxTag, TollTag, or EZ Tag — all work on all Texas toll roads
- TxTag and TollTag also work in Oklahoma, Kansas, Florida, and Colorado
- HCTRA took over TxTag operations from TxDOT in November 2024 — existing TxTags continue to work
- Get a tag at (TxTag), (TollTag), or (EZ Tag)
2. Pay-by-Mail (ZipCash / Drive Texas):
- License plate recognition; invoice mailed to registered vehicle owner at double the tag rate
- Rental cars billed via rental company (often with added admin fees)
- Non-payment escalates to toll violations and registration holds
3. Cash (very limited):
- Cash accepted only at a small number of older HCTRA cash booths in Houston; being phased out
- Most NTTA, CTRMA, and TxDOT-managed roads: cashless only

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use E-ZPass in Texas?

Do motorcycles pay tolls in Texas?
Yes. Motorcycles are classified as 2-axle passenger vehicles and pay the standard tag or Pay-by-Mail rate. Tag transponders are available for motorcycles.
Are there veteran discounts in Texas?
